I looked and looked for something to reblog to raise awareness or SOMETHING about all this, but most of the posts here on Tumblr are in Spanish, which is unfortunate because it leads me to believe that very few non-Mexican people are aware of this.
Now I’m not very good at writing inspiring articles, and I’m only recently informed of these events thanks to my Mexican born girlfriend, so you can read the one in the link and read my very skeletal explanation. Basically, Mexico’s presidential election just took place, and a man named Enrique Pena Nieto “won” the presidency.
This man and those surrounding him are extremely corrupt. Nieto allegedly bought thousands of votes by handing out grocery store gift cards to citizens worth 500 pesos, (roughly seven bucks) and the lower class people of Mexico are too poor to decline such an offer. He had some people rig up some algorithm that counted his digital ballots, keeping his votes a certain constant percentage higher than the other candidates. This was a stupid-ass thing to do and relatively easy to catch. I’m pretty sure Anonymous uncovered that.
As you may or may not know, Mexico has been under the thumb of corrupt officers and politicians for many years. Many innocent people have been kidnapped, hung, decapitated and strung up in the streets, killed in bombings, and kicked from their homes. The Mexican citizens had hope that their new president would crack down on the drug trafficking and begin to heal the country. Unfortunately, there is a LOT of money in it and a lot of people who would rather reap the benefits and turn a blind eye to the violence. How can a president who used corrupt methods to win an election be trusted to protect his people?
That’s the bare bones of it. I encourage everyone to look into this and spread the word. Protesters rallying against Nieto were holding signs in different languages in hopes of catching the attention of worldwide media, but it still seems to be slipping through the cracks. Please, if you can do nothing else, look into this, spread the word, be educated. I’m trying to understand myself, but what I do know is that I fear for the people who will either continue living with the violence and corruption, or become a part of a civil war where the violence will only get worse.
